Top 7 Places to Visit in Shimla: A First-Timer's Guide
Shimla, the former summer capital of British India, is still the gateway most travellers use to enter Himachal Pradesh. Perched at roughly 2,200 metres, it mixes colonial-era architecture, pine-covered ridges and lively bazaars. Here are the places that are genuinely worth your time.
1. The Ridge and Mall Road
The Ridge is the open central esplanade of Shimla, with mountain views on one side and the neo-Gothic Christ Church on the other. Mall Road runs alongside and is the best place for a slow evening walk, street snacks and shopping for woollens and wooden handicrafts. Most of the Mall Road area is pedestrian-only.
2. Christ Church
One of the oldest churches in North India, this yellow building anchors the Ridge. It is especially pretty at sunset, and the stained-glass windows are worth a quick look inside.
3. Jakhoo Temple
The Jakhoo Hill is the highest point in Shimla and is home to a Hanuman temple. You can walk up, take a taxi, or use the ropeway. Carry your snacks carefully, as the local monkeys are famously bold.
4. Kufri
About 16 km from Shimla, Kufri is known for its views, pony rides and, in winter, snow. The Himalayan Nature Park nearby is a good stop for families. Go early in the day to avoid the crowds.
5. Mashobra and Naldehra
Both are a short drive from Shimla and far quieter. Mashobra has apple orchards and forest walks, while Naldehra is known for its golf course set in a deodar forest and for the Tattapani route beyond it.
6. Viceregal Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study)
Built in the 1880s, this stone building has beautifully kept gardens and a guided tour of the interiors. It is a good way to understand Shimla's colonial history.
7. Chadwick Falls and Annandale
Chadwick Falls is a seasonal waterfall best visited just after the monsoon. Annandale is a flat open ground once used for polo and cricket, with a small army heritage museum.

- March to June: pleasant weather, ideal for sightseeing
- July to September: monsoon, lush green but with a risk of landslides
- December to February: cold, with a good chance of snowfall
