Offbeat Places Near Shimla: Escape the Crowds
Shimla is popular for a reason, but it can also feel crowded. If you want the mountains without the traffic, these lesser-known spots close to Shimla are worth adding to your trip.
1. Chail
About 45 km from Shimla, Chail sits among thick deodar and pine forests. It is home to the Chail Palace, the former summer residence of the Maharaja of Patiala, and one of the highest cricket grounds in the world. A quiet, restful stop.
2. Narkanda
Around 65 km from Shimla, Narkanda is a small hill station with apple orchards and wide meadows. In winter it turns into a modest skiing spot, and the Hatu Peak viewpoint offers long views of the snow ranges on a clear day.
3. Tattapani
Known for its natural hot springs on the banks of the Sutlej river, Tattapani is a relaxing stop for those who want a break from the cold. It is roughly 50 km from Shimla.
4. Mashobra
A peaceful village just a few kilometres from the city, with forest trails, small cafes and orchards. It is a good base if you want a slower pace.
5. Shali Tibba
Less visited than Kufri, Shali Tibba offers a sweeping view of the valley and is a favourite with trekkers. A short, easy trek gets you to the top.
6. Fagu
Fagu is a small village on the road to Narkanda. It is well suited to a picnic, and in winter it sees good snowfall.
7. Sarahan (Bhimakali Temple)
A longer drive from Shimla, Sarahan is home to the Bhimakali Temple, an impressive example of Himachali temple architecture, with the Srikhand Mahadev peak visible in the background.

- Roads are narrow in places, so allow extra travel time
- Hire a local driver if you are not used to mountain roads
- Check road and weather conditions before leaving, especially in winter and monsoon
